In my last blog I compared boxers George Foreman and Mike Tyson to presidential candidate Donald Trump. Today the comparison is between the zealous supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and ordinary religious zealots.
Sanders supporters are “faith-based.” Their ideology trumps (pun intended) their judgment regarding who has the best chance of winning the November election.
After listening to liberals debating about Hillary vs. Bernie, the inescapable conclusion is that even though the Republican Party has a boatload of absolutely insane morons for candidates, we Democrats have a good chance of snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory due to this primary battle.
Particularly troubling are female Sanders supporters. They completely disregard some incredible statistics:
1) There have been 44 male presidents in this country’s history and 0 female presidents.
2) A female has not even been nominated for the position
3) We’ve had 227 years of male presidents and 0 years of female presidents.
4) Women have had the vote since 1919—97 years—and they still haven’t nominated or elected a woman, even though they outnumber men in the electorate.
Female Sanders supporters say they won’t vote for a candidate just because she’s a woman. They don’t like Hillary’s “politics.” She’s too tied in to Wall Street, she can’t be trusted, she’s for the status quo, they want a revolution, yada yada. In fact, they vehemently resent the suggestion they vote for a candidate based on gender. It seems they’re willing to wait another 227 years or until they’ve had the vote for another century.
The truth is that women would find a way not to vote for another woman regardless of her politics. The reason there is such a small minority of women in the House, the Senate, and other positions of power is—women voters.
Yea, verily, ‘tis one of the great mysteries.
Believing in Bernie Sanders is comparable to believing in virgin births and resurrections. For example, how can he pass universal health care with a Republican controlled Congress that has voted over 60 times to defund Obamacare? Does he wave a magic wand?
Here’s a comment in the New York Times from a man named Ernest Lamonica of Queens:
….if Bernie is the Democratic nominee no one else will be electable down ticket…. If you believe Americans will vote for a candidate on a ticket headed by a 74-year-old Jewish Socialist from New England then you probably believe Donald Trump is a lot different than Martin Shkreli (the dude who bought the AIDS drug and raised the price by 5500%).
Then there are these statistics from New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof:
“A Gallup poll last year asking voters what kind of person they would be unwilling to consider voting for…. Some 24 percent wouldn’t vote for a gay candidate, and more than a third would refuse to vote for a Muslim or an atheist.
However, the most objectionable kind of person by far was a socialist. Fifty percent of Americans said they would be unwilling to consider voting for a socialist.”
So despite the clown show of potential Republican nominees, the Democrats could self-destruct because neither a woman nor a socialist can win, and the major reason for the former’s failure would be her fellow females.
This brings us to an item in Reuters:
NEW YORK, Feb 5 –“ A prominent Democratic donor worried about the party’s chances of winning the presidency emailed dozens of fans of Vice President Joe Biden on Friday, urging them to remain prepared to donate if Biden jumps into the race.
The donor, Bill Bartmann, cited new polling showing Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont nearly tied with Hillary Clinton…. Bartmann and other party insiders are concerned that Sanders, a self-proclaimed Democratic socialist, is too far to the left to win against a Republican in the Nov. 8 presidential election.”
Biden might be the Democratic Party’s best option because he’s very likable and decidedly mainstream. He doesn’t offend anyone, and he has a good sense of humor. His gaffes are amusing, like when he whispered to Barack Obama near an open microphone at the signing of the Affordable Care Act, “This is a big bleeping deal,” with the bleeped word coming through loud and clear. And who could forget how he blurted out his support for gay marriage before the 2012 election, which forced Obama to some out of the closet on the issue then rather than after the voting was over.
The reality is neither Hillary nor Bernie could ever get anything passed through a Republican congress if they were elected, but Biden, who’s been in the Senate forever and knows how to schmooze, might possibly be able to reach across the aisle and get something done. That could be naïve, but it’s a possibility.
Right now the odds are even that a third Democrat will get into the race, and his name is Joe Biden. He may be the savior of the left.

I don’t want Biden. He could win. That fruitcake Liarwatha would force me to make a large contribution to whoever her opponent would be. She is almost as hateable as Hillary.
That’s good, Mike. You actually posted a comment that addressed the topic in the column. You see, I just have to have patience with youse guys. 🙂
If only his comment made sense….
