I was never in love with Hillary Clinton, but I wanted her to become the first female president in the 227-year history of our country. Women have had the vote for a century (since 1919), but she was the first to get a presidential nomination from a major political party.
It wasn’t to be, however, even though she was light-years more qualified and intelligent than the reality show host with no political experience who won. There were many reasons for her loss, one of them being that 53% of white women voted for Donald Trump.
It turned out I was more of a feminist than many of the female voters who failed to vote for the woman who could have broken the ultimate glass ceiling. I am now convinced that although there are a number of wonderful Democratic female presidential candidates, there’s no way one of them can win.
As of now the clear front-runner for the nomination is former Vice-President Joseph Biden. It’s very early, for sure, but he already has a substantial lead in the polls, and the other candidates are hoping he’ll make one of his famous gaffes or that they’ll find a way to cut into his lead when the debates begin.
Perhaps one of them can do what the Patriots did in Super Bowl LI in 2017, i.e., overcome a 25-point lead like the Atlanta Falcons had over them and ultimately prevail. Biden’s lead is already that large, and even Jabba the Trump is getting nervous about it, twittering endlessly about Uncle Joe and pumping him up, against all advice from his campaign team.
I’m not crazy about Biden, either, but he may be the best candidate to beat Donald Trump. The reason why is very simple.
Americans are exhausted by Trump. There is rarely a day that goes by without some kind of insane statement of policy coming from the President, some attack on the media, the FBI, the CIA, the intelligence service, one of his cabinet members, followed by a complete contradiction later in the day regarding what he declared in the morning.
If he’s not threatening a trade war, he’s moving us toward a potential military conflict. He embraces foreign dictators and insults our allies.
People in this country are stressed out. They want a return to normalcy. What is normal? It’s the way things were under the first 44 presidents.
Progressives spit out the words, “status quo,” but most Americans would love things to go back to the way they were in the Obama years, or the Bush, Clinton, even the Reagan years.
Which of the Democratic presidential candidates would Americans view as returning us to normalcy, to a president who wasn’t a narcissistic psychopath and a pathological liar and whose primary goal was to roil the country and keep it in a state of high tension.
Which candidate could help America relax again, to govern as a responsible, calm, confident leader?
Not Bernie Sanders. He’d have half the country foaming at the mouth with his demands for delusional progressive principles. Even though I love her and think she’s the best candidate of all of them, Elizabeth Warren would provoke the same reactions as Sanders. A gay man as president in this homophobic country with its phony religious zealots? My Scottish friends would tell you it’s daft to even consider Mayor Pete.
So who does that leave?
Joe Biden. Because the country is so debilitated by the daily craziness coming out of the Trump presidency, Biden may be the antidote, a president who can bring peace and tranquility to our lives and a wee bit of dignity to the government and the presidency. Affable, avuncular, non-threatening Joe may be the compromise candidate.
Many pundits say that after two presidential run failures, his time has come and gone. Ironically, this may be the only time in his 40+ year political career that the timing is perfect for him.
We didn’t know how good we had it under Obama. Jaysus, we didn’t know how good we had it under W. Everything is relative. Joe is going to cling to Obama’s coat tails and make the world believe Barack has endorsed him. Biden will promise to bring us back to the future, and if he’s smart he’ll start mentioning Michelle in every one of his campaign speeches.
At this point in time, Joe Biden is the man who can fulfill what should be the Democratic campaign slogan for 2020—-MAKE AMERICAN SANE AGAIN—DUMP TRUMP.
