In his press conference with Russian leader Vladimir Putin last Monday in Helsinki, Finland, Donald Trump gave Democrats a golden opportunity to obstruct his march to re-election as well as ensure their takeover of the House of Representatives in this November’s election.Trump threw the United States Intelligence Agency under the bus by stating he didn’t believe what they said, i.e., that Russia interfered with the 2016 American presidential election. Instead he supported Putin’s denial of that action, and he behaved like an obsequious toady currying favor with a foreign leader from a country that has always been an American rival and enemy. He humiliated himself and the country, and Democrats cannot allow that to become yet another Trump obscenity that fades into oblivion after a few news cycles. They need to take a page from the GOP playbook and make Helsinki the Republican version of Hillary Clinton’s Benghazi. The Benghazi, Libya, attack that resulted in the death of Ambassador Christopher Stevens happened in September of 2012. Republicans tried to blame Mrs. Clinton for that tragedy, and knowing she would likely be the presidential nominee after Obama’s second term, they wouldn’t let go of the issue. They conducted 32 hearings at a cost to taxpayers of $20 million. They kept hammering away until 2016, and they only relented because they had her e-mails to focus on.For four years all you heard from the GOP was Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi. Many political and military intelligence leaders believe that what Donald Trump did in Helsinki was an act of treason, and even some Republicans in Congress were appalled by Trump’s words. It came across so badly that the next day Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Vice-president Mike Pence convinced Mr. Trump to walk back his words. All they could come up with was the pathetic excuse that the president “misspoke” and meant to say “wouldn’t” instead of “would.” They had him read from a prepared statement, and he looked like he was making a hostage video. But he couldn’t help ad-libbing and said there could have been others involved in the election interference.Democrats should hang on to the Helsinki fiasco like a dog with a bone. Between now and November they can torment the Republicans with constant reminders of Trump’s performance, and they should go for broke and declare him a traitor to America.Trump has a penchant for labeling his rivals with insulting nicknames: “Crooked Hillary,” “Lying Ted” (Cruz) “Little Marco” (Rubio) “Low-Energy Jeb” (Bush), “Crazy Joe” (Biden), “Leakin’ James” (Comey), “Wild Bill” (Clinton), “Al Frankenstein” (Franken), and “Pocahontas” (Elizabeth Warren).During the election campaign of 2016 he only mentioned Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders one time, probably because he knew Hillary Clinton would win the nomination. His nickname for Sanders? “Comrade Bernie,” linking the Vermont senator’s avowed socialism with communism. After what happened in Helsinki, from this day forward Trump should only be referred to as “Comrade Donnie.” Other sobriquets could be “Trump the Traitor,” “Treasonous Trump,” or in reference to the many psychologists who’ve characterized his behavior as showing signs of dementia, “Demented Don” or “Donnie Demento.”Let’s not forget “Putin’s Poodle.”If nothing else these nicknames used ad nauseum will cause the thin-skinned Trump to implode.Consider the idiom “albatross around my neck.” It means “an annoying burden“ and comes from Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s epic poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.”An albatross is a large sea bird that was considered good luck. A sailor who had shot and killed one was forced by his shipmates to wear its carcass around his neck as punishment.Helsinki is the albatross that can be hung around Donald Trump’s neck. Democrats can’t let him live it down or forget it. He must be haunted by Helsinki the way Hillary was plagued by Benghazi.I love Michelle Obama, but we need to do the opposite of her 2016 mantra in which she said, “When they go low, we go high.”This time it should be “When they go low, we go lower.”
